Uttarakhand massive flood

Uttarakakhand From 14 to 17 June 2013, the Indian state of Uttarakhand and adjoining areas received heavy rainfall, which was about 375 percent more than the benchmark rainfall during a normal monsoon. This caused the melting of Chorabari Glacier at the height of 3800 metres, and eruption of the Mandakini River which led to heavy floods near Gobindghat, Kedar Dome, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Western Nepal, and acute rainfall in other nearby regions of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Tibet.

Heavy rainfall for four consecutive days as well as melting snow aggravated the floods. Warnings by the India Meteorological Department predicting heavy rains were not given wide publicity beforehand, causing thousands of people to be caught unaware, resulting in huge loss of life and property. In the city of Dehra Dun, capital of Uttarakhand, this was the wettest June day for over five decades.

But then the question still remains, was this massacre more man made and less due to nature?

What else can one expect when the nature is raped by mining mafia, real estate crooks that construct 5-storey buildings, hotels and guest houses on river bed and cutting down thousands of hectares of forests and building scores of dams indiscriminately in an ecologically sensitive zone disregarding warnings given by Environmentalists?
In June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides in the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami

As of 16 July 2013, according to figures provided by the Uttarakhand government, more than 5,700 people were "presumed dead."This total included 934 local residents.

RESCUE OPERATIONS

The Army, Air Force, Navy, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Public Works Department and local administrations worked together for quick rescue operations.Several thousand soldiers were deployed for the rescue missions. Helicopters were used to rescue people, but due to the rough terrain, heavy fog and rainfall, maneuvering them was a challenge. By 21 June 2013, the Army had deployed 10,000 soldiers and 11 helicopters, the Navy had sent 45 naval divers, and the Air force had deployed 43 aircraft including 36 helicopters.

On 25 June, one of 3 IAF Mil Mi-17 rescue helicopters returning from Kedarnath, carrying 5 Air Force Officers, 9 of the NDRF, and 6 of the ITBP crashed on a mountainous slope near Gauri Kund, killing all on board. The deceased soldiers were given a ceremonial Guard of honour by Home minister of India, at a function organised by the Uttarakhand State Government.

OUR Indian Army and Air force worked with full potential and courage and saved many people who were into this massacre but their were many who lost their lives.

EARTHQUAKE

                              EARTHQUAKE

"An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

Earthquakes are caused by disturbances in the interior of the earth and other causes.

1.Tectonic Movements:
2.Volcanic Eruptions:
3.Other Reasons:

The roofs of underground caves sometimes give way and release great force to cause minor tremors in the earth crust. Nuclear explosions also release massive energy to cause tremors in the earth crust.
Earthquakes are less advantageous and more harmful to man.Damage done is chiefly in following respects:
1.Loss of Property:

2.Loss of Life:
3.Changes in the course of rivers:

4.Tsunamis:

5.Mud Fountains:

On account of earthquakes of high intensity, warm water and mud fountains also burst.

6.Cracks in Earth Crust:

hurricane

HURRICANE

Causes of Hurricane:-

1. Hurricanes are large tropical storms that form in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

2. A hurricane has winds up to 74 miles per hour or more.

3. In the eye of a hurricane it is peaceful, but outside the eye it is rough.

Drought

Drought

Drought is an extended period when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply whether surface or underground water. A drought can last for months or years, or may be declared after as few as 15 days. Generally, this occurs when a region receives
consistently below average precipitation..

   Causes of Drought

    1.Low Rainfall or Delay of
           Monsoon:
    2.Faulty management of water
       resources:
    3.Decline in ground
       water level.
    4.Ignoring land management
Effects of Drought

  Economic

-Damage to crop quality, less food
   production
  - Increase in food prices
  - Unavailability of water and feed for

livestock which leads to high livestock
     mortality rates
- Income loss for farmers and others affected
                                   - Unemployment from production declines

Environmental-

Increased desertification -
Damage to animal species
- Lack of feed and drinking water
- Disease
- loss of wildlife in some areas and too many in others
- Damage to plant species

Social

- Loss of human life from food shortages, heat, suicides, violence
- Mental and physical stress
- Water user conflicts
- Political conflicts
- increased poverty
- Population migrations

Flood

FLOOD

A flood is an overflow of any amount of water that reaches land.
Floods occur usually when the volume of water within a body of water, such as a river or lake, exceeds
the total capacity of the formation, and as a result some of the water flows or sits outside of the normal perimeter of the body.

 1. Heavy rain where no proper rain water drainage system.

2.melting of ice fields in poles due to global warming.

3.may be due to construction of barriers like Dams, without proper estimation on maximum possible flood area.

4. can happen due to earth quake which may cause    tsunamis.

Effects.

1.major disasters.

2.loss of land

3.loss of source of food.

4.spreading of deceases

5.damages to properties.

6.obstruct communication systems like roads rails etc.

7.massive migration may occur, leading to poverty
and so on..
